What You Can Do To Help Your Criminal Defense Attorney Fight Your Case

Blog

If you are in the midst of a criminal defense case, you might be relying heavily on your lawyer's expertise and advice. There are actions that you should also take to help your case (or at least not jeopardize it). Here are four things that you can do to help your lawyer fight your criminal defense case.

1. Be Professional With Your Lawyer

Just because your criminal defense attorney is on your side doesn't mean that you don't need to be professional. Keep appointments, show up on time, and be ready and present for any meetings. If attorneys need your help in gathering documentation around your case, make this a priority.

2. Be Respectful to Other Parties

If you are interviewed by police or others involved in your case or arrest, make sure that you keep a calm demeanor. Being arrested can be stressful, especially if you aren't guilty or hope to plead a criminal arrest down to a lesser charge. Don't let your frustrations show. Everyone is trying to do their job, and if you can keep your cool the process will be smoother.

3. Share Details About Your Past With Your Lawyer

If you have a past that involves incidences such as prior arrests, complaints or domestic issues, this will be discovered by the prosecution. Be honest with your lawyer about anything in your past that might cause one to judge your character. Your lawyer needs to be prepared to defend anything from your past. If they are caught off guard with questions or accusations they didn't know about, this can hurt your defense.

4. Be Ready for Trial

If your case does go to trial, you need to put your best face forward in order to help your attorney plead your case. Make sure to show up early, and dress the part for court. Run through common questions and responses with your lawyer so that you can have succinct answers ready. Don't lash out or become emotional in court, as this can unintentionally cause a judge to grant a harsher ruling.

Do your lawyer a favor and meet them halfway when it comes to bringing a successful case to court. If you can be an active participant in the process, a defense lawyer, such as Andrew H. P. Norton, will have all of the tools to fight your case. Make sure that you are working hard and helping your case more forward just as much as your criminal defense attorney.
